Should my Lubuntu Performance be this bad?

hi - new user of linux here! just installed lubuntu-22.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso on my 2011 HP DM1z. it has a 64bit amd fusion 2 core processor and 8G of ram

it is running extremely slow… taking several seconds to respond to opening any app i click and not really keeping up with my key strokes

is there something i can do? or is this laptop not powerful enought to run Lubuntu? I was hoping to turn this little guy into a home server/ home automation server

No, you should be experiencing better performance with those hardware stats.

My first check would be to see what (if anything) is consuming your CPU resources.

Application menu > System Tools > qps

Then I’d sort by CPU, just to make it more obvious, and I’d look to see if something is using a high percentage of the CPU’s compute cycles.

That is where I would start.

Have you enabled an appropriate level of swap for your system usage?

I almost always tweak the default swap install, especially on older/resource-limited boxes; or when I forget the moment I notice performance is less than I expect. The default install provided by calamares is too small in my opinion, but we cannot change that (yet).

I’d also check the health of your drive, a new installation will likely have been placed on a different part of the disk you were using before, so exploring system logs look for clues can be useful, plus the usual SMART checks from live media I perform on any unexpected behavior with a box.

You didn’t mention what apps, which does matter. If it’s a snap for example, the initial run has a lot of setup/unsquashing to perform before execution can start, if the app is a GTK app those libraries/toolkits will need to be loaded into RAM as your desktop uses Qt etc…

From what you provided - I’d start with system logs, then the hardware checks (but that’s just as its something I do on any unexpected issue…).

hmm i followed your suggestions.
after reboot, only gnome system monitor using 10% cpu or less. every other process almost 0

my swap is set to 500MB (i have 8 GB ram and 250GB drive)
i found instructions online to use fallocate to increase it to 4GB but error message say
fallocate failed! text file busy
WHY IS THIS?

one other thing i notice is when machine starts i get a warngin
__common__interrupt: 1.55 no irq handler for vector
NOT SURE IF THIS IS IMPORTANT?

You’ve not said what instructions you followed, but if you followed our instructions found here which the swap FAQ link I provided pointed to, it gave instructions to check if swap was already enabled first, then to deactivate it, remove the old swapfile then re-create the desired size swapfile. My guess is you skipped the deactivate & remove steps (esp. deactivate which is I suspect why it said it was busy).

I agree with KGIII. Your hardware should be more than enough for running Lubuntu, without any performance problems at all.

A pretty safe way to test the effectiveness of enlarging the swap space would be to add a second swapfile (and leave the exiting swap partition or swap file in place). It is questionable wether adding swap space would give you any improvement. Reading mail with Thunderbird, browsing the same time with Firefox with multiple tabs open, should be absolutely possible with a good performance, on your machine with 8GB and 512 MB swap.

Most likely you have a memory problem. Perhaps one of the DRAM sticks is fawlty. I would leave the swapfile intact, and reboot with one module removed, round robin. Just see what happens.

That is where I would continue, if I was having such a bad, bad performance like you describe.

I’ve found the following quote on askubuntu.com, by a guy called popeye, from 2010 already, but it is still very valid:

"Just because swap is allocated, doesn’t mean it’s being ‘used’. Whilst programs like system monitor and top will show some of your swap space being allocated (in your example 770MB) that doesn’t mean that the system is actively swapping in/out.

To find out if anything is swapping in/out you can use the vmstat command. Leave it running a few seconds to settle down and watch the si (swapin) and so (swapout) columns. If nothing is happening then there is no reason to be concerned."

Maybe you’ll find it Interesting to try the following in a terminal, and follow a bit what is happening:

$ vmstat 1

It goes on forever. You can end it with Ctrl+C.

For reference, I’ve done some tests on equal machines with 2GB and 4GB, and 512MB swap space. When opening Thunderbird and Firefox with twelve tabs the 4GB machine does not show any signs of swapping. The 2GB machine shows a little oscillation of si and so, after six tabs or so, but the machine is not noticable slowing down. Not at all.

Update
I forgot something. I think your machine is still capable (after you’ve solved the current problem) for many years to go with Lubuntu. 8GB, 2 cores at 1.6GHz (if I’ve read it correctly), 11.6". Nice small form-factor.

Not bad at all. But, maybe the RAM is soldered in (bad luck if it is broken) or/and the hard disk is with moving parts (2011, many laptops shipped with traditional disks, not SSD). If it is HD, swapping to it would mean a catastrophic performance penalty compared to SSD). If you still like your machine, I advice you to upgrade the HD to SSD. It sure is worth it.

Update 2
There are other, more economic solutions for home automation servers, with a much smaller ecological footprint.

@Fritz thanks for the suggestion. i ran vmstat 1 but i dont see any usage of swap (si and so columns are zeros) . so im guessing that is not the problem.

not sure what else to do to try to debug this lousy performance

Can you reboot the machine, and then share the output of sudo dmesg with us? I’m wondering if maybe there’s some sort of kernel incompatibility, perhaps ACPI-related.

@ArrayBolt3 thanks for your help. here is the output of dmesg. as i mentioned, the machine is so incredibly slow to respond. i reran the monitoring tool again and only see a few % of cpu being used by a couple of processes.

NOTE this is only 1/2 of the file… this platform wont let me attach the full file…

It would have been better if you provided the whole file, using a pastebin type site.

eg. sudo dmesg |pastebinit

then provide the link in your comment here.

I realize you followed the instructions @ArrayBolt3 provided, but if I hit size limit I’d have switched to using such a site, and there are many that allow pasting text from your browser
