Visual artifacts Lubuntu 21.10 in GUI and text editor

Lenovo Thinkpad T480. Lubuntu 21.10. Kernel 5.13.0-40-generic
GPU: Integrated Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620

Since a while ago I have these visual artifacts when hovering with the mouse around GUIs. It also happens as well when I do caret text selection in featherpad for example.

Any idea how to fix this?

The problem is almost certainly the kernel. You probably got a kernel update that isn’t so compatible with your system’s graphics. The easiest way to test this nowadays is to boot up Lubuntu 22.04 or 20.04 from a USB stick and see what happens. If this fixes the problem, then it’s almost certainly a kernel issue.

At this point you have three options. You can downgrade your OS to Lubuntu 20.04, upgrade to Lubuntu 22.04, or downgrade your kernel to an earlier version so you can keep using Lubuntu 21.10. Since Lubuntu 21.10 goes out of support in a few months, and Lubuntu 20.04 goes partially out of support in a little less than a year, I would recommend upgrading to Lubuntu 22.04 (unless of course booting into it didn’t fix the problem). However, if you really want to continue using your current OS, you can uninstall the latest Linux kernel update and stay on the last kernel that worked for you using these instructions: grub2 - How to downgrade kernel after bad update (16.04) - Ask Ubuntu Note that you’ll have to change the particular kernel packages that you uninstall to match the latest kernel you’re using - you can find out what kernel you’re on by using the command uname -r.

If you choose to switch to Lubuntu 22.04, you may not have to do a total reinstall. Try upgrading your system using these instructions: https://manual.lubuntu.me/stable/D/upgrading.html Just make sure to back up your data first in case something goes awry.
