Video card keeps shutting off when I boot Lubuntu 22.04

Hi everyone!

I’m not sure how to explain this but I’m working on a desktop computer for someone and I’m trying to install Lubuntu 22.04 on it for a very specific reason. I need to install a modified version of Nvidia’s proprietary driver, version 340, from a PPA here…

and I’m not able to get it to work on 24.04. For some reason, the video card keeps shutting off as soon as Lubuntu starts loading and I don’t why or how to fix it in this state. Moving the mouse doesn’t do anything. However, I can see the BIOS screen without any problems. The live version of Lubuntu 22.04 worked fine as long as I chose the option that included “safe graphics.” If I chose the regular, standard option, I ran into the same problem.

This situation is bizarre and I’ve never seen a computer do this before! :astonished:

I’m assuming Lubuntu is loading the Nouveau graphics driver by default and I suspect this driver might be the cause of the problem. How do I fix this long enough to install the Nvidia drivers? The video card is a GeForce GTX 970 [10de:13c2] (rev a1) The subsystem information is: eVga.com. Corp. GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] [3842:1970] The kernel modules are: nvidiafb, nouveau.

If you have any questions, please let me know and I’ll try to answer them. Thank you for any and all help you guys can give!

I’ve just done a quick research at NVIDIA’s website. Hence, for NVIDIA’s 900 series version 340 is not suitable. Please assure yourself: Driver Search

Hi Wolf314

Thank you for your help! Praise and thanks to God, your answer led me to the realization that 24.04 (and I’m sure 22.04) had the Nvidia drivers available in “Additional Drivers.” So I just installed the version 535 drivers using that utility. Doing that seems to have resolved the other issue, which was that the video card was constantly “shutting off” while booting up the OS or after it had loaded. Yay!!

It appears that something is wrong or lacking with the Nouveau drivers. Lord willing, perhaps a bug report might be beneficial here.

At any rate, it appears this matter is “SOLVED.”
