Lubuntu 22.04.1 LTS Installer Error - Bootloader failure - Error Code 1

I’m trying to install Lubuntu 22.04.1 LTS from a live usb onto a hard drive with an existing windows 7 installation. Apparently I had created a partition on half on a 120 GB SSD and left the other half blank. I chose this blank space (/dev/sda2 below) for the install. Unfortunately, I received the following error:

  1. The bootloader could not be installed. The installation command
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=ubuntu --force
    returned error code 1.

What should my next step be? I’m still in the same live session.

Thanks in advance.

Quick reminder - always back up your data if at all possible before trying to install a second OS! That way you can recover if something goes wrong and accidentally messes up your existing OS (for instance, if you pick the wrong partition or if partitioning fails and takes out the existing partition).

Look in your bios for anything about EFI mode, and turn it off. Your Windows 7 installation is in BIOS mode, but the Lubuntu installer is booting in EFI mode for some reason. The two don’t mix very well. Once you have EFI turned off, try to install Lubuntu into the same partition you installed it into the first time, and it should work.

Thanks! ASRock made it very hard to find, but I tried again and it installed with issue.
