Lubuntu 21.10 completely freezes when watching videos on old Macbook Pro

I installed Lubuntu 21.10 (fresh install from USB stick, reformatting the hard drive) and I experience frequent freezes that I didn’t experience on Lubuntu 20.10. This happens pretty much every time I try to watch videos, but also sometime randomly.

With your help in a previous post, I managed to solve the issue with Firefox by disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox’s settings. But now I have the same issue with VLC, and also sometime randomly (not watching videos). I suspect when an app tries to use the GPU? (not sure)

Just to clarify, when I say “freeze”, I mean that the window of the app (ex: Firefox) becomes unresponsive and the video doesn’t play, then after 10 sec the whole computer freezes (ex: the clock in the task bar stops updating) for 2 to 10 minutes. Only the mouse cursor can move, but nothing else happens. For that reason, I cannot use htop or qps to see what’s going on.

One thing I noticed is that Lubuntu 20.10 had a way to let me install NVIDIA drivers (my macbook has a GeForce 9400M graphics card) that Lubuntu 21.10 is missing. Any idea why it’s not showing up in Additional Drivers? (only my wifi card is showing up)
This is what I see on Lubuntu 21.10:

In the meantime, I’ll try to deactivate hardware acceleration in VLC too… :slightly_frowning_face:

Listening to music with VLC doesn’t cause issues. Only with videos.

Any idea? It’s frustrating because otherwise, Lubuntu is perfectly functional on this old macbook. I’ve been using it for a month now.

Have you tried an alternative video player?

Celluloid and the very light mpv Media Player are two that I’d test.

They’re not nearly as feature-filled as VNC, but they work well enough for watching videos.

Also, I don’t know how to check, but the proprietary drivers drop support for older versions of their video cards. This leaves you with just the free drivers.

Edit: Fixed typo.

The problem is not specific to VLC. I also have freezes in apps that have nothing to do with playing videos. For example, the Discovery app. I suspect that any apps that uses accelerated graphics are causing this? Maybe?

I am out of ideas. At this point, I’d start rooting through error logs.

I’ve never done that. Where should I start?

My personal preference is to use a GUI tool, specifically ksystemlog, which can be installed with sudo apt install ksystemlog. Once you’ve done that, it’s fairly self-explanatory. You go through the various logs looking for errors. When/if you find errors, you can copy and paste them into your favorite search engine and maybe find a solution, but you can hopefully at least isolate a cause.

It’s a bit hit-or-miss, but it’s worth trying at this point.

I found these errors, happening around the time my computer began to freeze:

Searching online, it seems to be related to a missing nvidia driver. So every time any apps tries to use my graphics card, the computer freeze for a few minutes.

Why am I missing the option to install the Nvidia drivers in “Additional Drivers” app? (see screenshot above in first post above) It was there when I was on Lubuntu 20.10 but it’s not present in 21.10. Why is it gone?
