today when i booted the login flashed a couple of times then stopped. logged in fine. thanks everyone for looking into this. i can live with it as is.
Yeah Iāve left mine sit there for hour+, the flash-cycle pattern does changeā¦ (some DM/greeters time out and hide the login screen, this timeout maybe the trigger for the change, but it gives me a headache so I tend to not watch it closely).
If it becomes a pain, the easiest fixes I found were replacing sddm
with either xdm
or lightdm
Some of my remarks are pasted here, many elsewhere such as bug reports. (I see xdm
mentioned on this thread, but lightdm
only in bug report)

guess i spoke too soonā¦ today it is flashing non-stopā¦ when i pressed the box that lets you choose lxqt or lubuntu or openbox it stopped flashing. will have to research changing to xdm or lightdm as you mentioned and see if that works for me.
i tried lxqt ā¦ it completes the login but still flashes greeter when i reboot and login.
tried openbox, it hangs on the login and never gets past greeterā¦ have to switch console and reboot.
installed lightdm and got nice login screen with no flashing, but it would not accept my password. Ended up going back to sddm so i could get logged in.

Is this still a problem?
I just installed 20.04 on an HP dv9000 laptop and I am dealing with the flashing. I have only just gotten the install to work, so I havenāt looked into switching to the nvidia drivers. On a previous install (which ended up unstableā¦ canāt remember why) I was looking into loading themā¦ but hadnāt quite gotten there yet. I plan on trying (though I am really nervous about screwing something up after working for so long to get this install to work!)ā¦ and will try to post as much info as I can if I get there.
