Keyboard problem

I have been using Lubuntu for a couple of months now. Day before yesterday Lubuntu Update, updated my firmware and now my keyboard isn’t recognized at all. The mouse works fine. Note that I am sharing the keyboard and mouse with a second computer via a KVM switch.

Does this sound like an operating system problem or a hardware problem with my machine? Any suggestions for a fix?

PS as a temporary fix I am using a wireless keyboard plugged into a USB port but obviously would llke to go back to the single keyboard.

You’ve provided no Ubuntu/Lubuntu release details; so we can’t yet imagine what upgrades you could have received, nor look up any specifics. To know what updates are possible, we’d also need some behavior details, eg. do you apply upgrades daily? every second day? weekly? so we can explore what updates occurred for your unstated release.

If I was in your position, given you have access to the machine, I’d your machine logs to what actually updated.

If it is firmware update related however, that update comes not from Ubuntu, but from the maker/OEM of your hardware and Ubuntu is only involved in the download & initiation process only; with issues about that firmware all handled by the OEM/supplier of the firmware-update. If it was due to firmware update, you’d probably have identical problem if using another OS, as its the OS is effected by your firmware which sits between hardware & the OS/software you run on your machine.

We can’t comment on Lubuntu parts, as you provided no specifics there.

Hardware, at least assuming you’re using USB. USB devices don’t really need any special drivers or anything. The fact that the mouse works fine indeed suggests that the machine to KVM switch connection works and that the port the mouse is in works. So move the keyboard to the mouse port and see if it works. If it does, you know the problem: bad port.
