Is this normal startup?

We have an older laptop that we use for travel. I just installed Lubuntu 18.043 LTS, release 18.04. The desktop works fine, it just takes a long time to load. The first screen to appear is lines of code starting with [303.324164] atomic-helper-wait-for-flip-done … The GRUB screen appears about 30 seconds after power up. Then a black blank screen appears. At 90 seconds after power up, another screen with more code appears starting with [51.273861] update_load_avg … At 150 seconds, the screen goes black and blank. At 230 seconds, the desktop appears. This is a dual boot installation with Windows Vista, we regularly use a program that does not work on Linux. We have 1014 Mb of RAM.
Is this a normal startup process for Lubuntu?

No before grub appears on-screen is related to your laptop configuration options, or hardware-health as 30 seconds is a long time unless you have thorough POST/ram tests or something being done. Loading grub’s first stage is 512 bytes (characters) read off disk (one sector or MBR), which points to the menu elsewhere on disk inside a partition (/boot/grub/) but this should still occur within a fraction of a second unless you have configuration, unusual hardware issues or problems. (I am assuming legacy and not UEFI boot)

I would check SMART health (smart monitoring analysis & reporting technology) built into all but the cheapest hdd/ssd’s. I’d boot a ‘live’ system to read the data (smartctl, gnome-disks or whatever program you prefer available on whatever OS you use). You might discovered you disk is failing causing the low-performance & this is your warning to get any wanted data off it before it dies…

I just did a phone stop-watch timing of the boot-up of my ibm thinkpad t43 (pentium m, 1.5gb ram) and it took ~50 seconds to get to login screen from first disk activity (I don’t have grub active as I only have Lubuntu 18.04 on it). I didn’t time further as I’d have to enter password & stop-watch timing would be pretty meaningless…

Yes 1gb is very limited ram, but I’d check your BIOS setup & look at your hardware health (if vista works well; use it to view your SMART data as it could be on a good part of the disk, but lubuntu was installed to the could-be-growing bad part hence is slower… but this is guess. More details about your hardware may provide other clues instead of just pure-guesses. My 2c

I ran the Windows “Disk Check” and it returned 0 errors and made 0 repairs.

Here is result of the lshw.text.

I changed the BIOS boot order and now the GRUB screen appears within several seconds on power up! It still takes about 200 seconds; with a blank page, a page of code and another blank page, from power up for the desktop to appear.

Please open a terminal, execute (copy&paste):

{ systemd-analyze blame; systemd-analyze critical-chain } > boot.txt

and then post the content of the file boot.txt.

You can also create a graphic with:

If we compare my request:

{ systemd-analyze blame; systemd-analyze critical-chain } > boot.txt

with your version:

sudo systemd-analyze blame; systemd-analyze critical-chain > boot.txt

It is not really the same. But there is a gap between dev-sda6.device and plymouth-quit-wait.service. And you have a lot of dev-loop\d+.device entries.

You can check it with:

systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait.service
systemctl status dev-sda6.device

Maybe there is some error message.

And check also that the UUIDs and mountpoints in cat /etc/fstab are the same as in lsblk -f.

Thank you, hope this helps.

Your /etc/fstab looks good, there is no problem.
It is strange, that it is loading a dev-sda6.device, but you don’t have a device /dev/sda6.

Please post systemd-analyze critical-chain, then we see where you “loose” time.

And post also the errors during the last boot: journalctl -xb -p err

The forum will not allow me to post the text of your requests, something about only 2 names. I can upload screen shots of the terminal if that would work for you.

It shouldn’t be a problem to copy&paste text and then post it. But it might be, that your level here in the forum is not high enough.

As an alternative, you can upload to a paste service and share the links here:

systemd-analyze critical-chain | pastebinit
journalctl -xb -p err | pastebinit

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/6WNTR4Xdst/

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/CBScNz2N9q/

Let’s try this, Thank you!

I see two intervals in the first paste, where your system is blocked: At the beginning the system is waiting/blocked about 42 seconds and after systemd-user-sessions.service another ~90 seconds.

In the second paste, I see a lot of flip_done timed out errors. There seems to be a fix via a kernel boot parameter as follows (please use copy and paste of the input/code to avoid errors):

  1. Edit the file /etc/default/grub: VISUAL=leafpad sudoedit /etc/default/grub

  2. Replace the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"

  3. Save and close the editor

  4. Update your Grub configuration: sudo update-grub

  5. Reboot

This might speed up your boot.

And if something is unclear, please ask here first.

PS: A launchpad bug

Thank you so much for your patience and knowledge. The time between the GRUB screen and the login window is now 42 seconds! Now to begin a new post on enabling the Broadcom wifi card.
