Desktop shortcut loses icon when renaming

Hi, I’m a new user of Lubuntu (20.04) and linux generally. I’m having a bit of trouble with desktop shortcuts. First I figured out that after creating the shortcut, I need to right-click it and select “trust this executable”, otherwise it will not launch (why is that?). But then when I rename the shortcut using right-click rename, the icon is replaced with a text file icon. I also notice that its file type has changed from “desktop configuration file” to “plain text document”. How do I rename a shortcut without it changing its icon?

EDIT: I ended up editing the .desktop file directly. But this is hardly intuitive…

Thanks!

Security.

Presumedly you changed the extension, too, or perhaps even removed it entirely.
