Does lubuntu use a default X11 compositor?
I recently ran compton and it slows things down and I don’t see a benefit.
What am I running by default?
compton is autostarted, you can disable if you want in Session Configuration.
Was it ever off by default?
It is off but I don’t remember doing it.
Actually, it’s not autostarted in either Disco or Eoan.
Also: the default settings of Compton aren’t too exciting. You can use compton-conf (“Window Effects” in the menu) to tweak it. You’ll have to restart it for those changes to have an effect, though.
